How can I increase the ranking and/or searchability of my site?

The searchability of a site is to a large extent influenced by its meta tags. These are tags contained in the <head> section of a site's HTML coding and consists of a title, meta keywords and a meta description describing the contents of the site. For guidelines on adding meta tags, click here.

When being indexed by our spider (search engine indexing technology), a complex algorithm is used to determine your site's ranking based on the meta tags and (to a lesser degree) the body text on the page.

Overall, sites using frames are also more difficult to index, meaning that its ranking might actually be lower than a site using tables (for example). So if you are using frames, perhaps consider changing it to tables or click here for tips on optimising framed sites.

Furthermore, you should also continuously monitor the ranking of any sites which are in competition to yours. If these sites get a better ranking than yours, have a look at their meta tags and consider modifying yours accordingly / in a similar manner.

How can I retrieve more relevant results when searching Ananzi?

All search engines work on a principle of "Garbage in, garbage out". That means, if you ask for something too broad, or too specific, you might not get what you are looking for.

If you however use a few universally used search engine tips and strategies, it would notably increase the quality of your search results:

  • Specify the search string as a phrase whenever you are looking for something which is more than one word, e.g. "free ringtones"
  • Add a "+" sign in front of each word to specify that each word MUST appear in the results. If both does not appear, you will find no results, e.g. +free +ringtones
  • Add a "-" sign in front of each word you do NOT want to appear in the search results, e.g. +free +ringtones -mtn
If you do not specify any of the above, it will first look for both words you have entered, and if the search engine are not able to find both words on one site, it will start bringing back results containing either of the words.

For further information on optimising your searches, go to our Tips page, look out for our rotating tips on Ananzi's search results pages or visit Ananzi's Help file.

What are meta tags and how do I add them to my site?

The description, listing and ranking of sites in the Ananzi search engine is determined by a complex algorithm which gathers information from the following tags on your site, e.g. title, meta tags, body text, etc.

Meta tags should be placed in the <head> section of a site's front page and normally consist of a title, meta description and meta keywords. These are used to describe the content found on the site.

It is advisable not to repeat the same word more than twice within each of the above-mentioned tags, as most search engines has a buildt-in spamming detection feature. Should you repeat the same word too often, it might negatively influence your ranking in search engines.

The "title" tag contains the name or title of your web site, while the "description" meta tag contains a short description of your site. These two tags are important due to the fact that their content are extracted to form the name and summary of your site as displayed in the search results page.

The "keywords" meta tag should be used to include keywords that are relevant to your site and which in turn, will enable your site to be searchable. Beware not to use more than 100 words in this tag, as this will also be seen as spamming, which might in turn result in a negative ranking.

Use the example below to help set up your meta tags:

Example: <html>
<head>
<title>Add an appropriate title for your site here</title>
<meta name="description" content="Add an appropriate description of your site here">
<meta name="keywords" content="word1, word2, word3, word4, ....">
</head>

<body>
...
</body>

</html>

Note: If you are using frames on your site, make sure to add the meta tags to the container (frameset) page.

Should you not want to include meta tags in your site, Ananzi's technology will automatically create a "smart summary" which will extract plain text from your site.

Additional information on optimising your site for search engines and improving your site's ranking is available from Search Engine Watch.
